From “Project 951” to a global brand
Chery began in 1997 as a state-backed project to build an automaker from the ground up in Wuhu, a city that had seen little industrial development. Within two years it was building cars; by 2001 it became the first Chinese manufacturer to export passenger vehicles.
Since 2003 Chery has been the leading exporter of Chinese-brand passenger cars. Today its vehicles are sold in more than 80 markets, with over 13 million owners worldwide and record sales of more than 2.6 million vehicles in a single year.
That global scale is matched by serious engineering investment — from turbocharged petrol engines to the next-generation Chery Super Hybrid system — all backed by an industry-leading 7-year warranty.
